About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned Exchange Engineer to support and evolve a mission-critical messaging environment for a large-scale government IT operation. This role is ideal for an expert with deep Exchange and Microsoft 365 knowledge who thrives in hybrid infrastructure settings and enjoys both maintenance and innovation.
You’ll split your focus between ongoing system administration and the design and rollout of a modern Exchange 2019 environment, working within a DevOps-driven team focused on collaboration, reliability, and automation.
Key Responsibilities
- Day-to-day management and performance tuning of a hybrid Exchange Server infrastructure (Exchange 2016 & 2019)
- Design, build, and deploy a new Exchange 2019 environment in a high-availability configuration
- Automate administration using PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC) and custom scripting
- Maintain and support backend components of Microsoft Teams within Microsoft 365
- Develop and deliver tooling to support helpdesk operations (e.g., PowerShell scripts for ticket resolution)
- Migrate mailboxes and users from legacy systems into the new environment
- Coordinate with infrastructure teams—covering identity management, networking, and endpoint operations
- Integrate monitoring systems with platforms like Splunk to ensure proactive system health checks
- Contribute to continuous service improvement through technical advice and solution proposals
- Collaborate in Agile planning, daily stand-ups, and the Change Advisory Board (CAB)
Technical Environment
- Exchange 2016 (Hybrid) currently in production with 25,000+ mailboxes
- Migration and setup of Exchange 2019 (Hybrid) environment in progress
- Hosted on Cisco UCS hardware within a government-owned data center
- Monitoring via Splunk, automation via PowerShell DSC
- Interfaces with M365 for Teams, Outlook, and related services
What We’re Looking For
- Strong background in Microsoft Exchange (2016 and/or 2019) in enterprise or public-sector environments
- Proficiency in PowerShell scripting and automation (especially DSC)
- Experience with Microsoft 365, particularly backend support for Teams and Outlook
- Familiarity with hybrid identity and authentication models (e.g., AAD Connect, SSO)
- Comfortable working in Agile teams and participating in planning and change processes
- Prior exposure to monitoring tools such as Splunk is a plus
- Broader knowledge of Windows Server ecosystems and infrastructure management
